So, about two weeks ago, during a drilling session, I was given my last white belt stripe. This is an indication that I am ready to test for my blue belt. I am pretty flattered by this, as Jim is a notoriously difficult grader.
So now I am pretty close to earning my blue belt in BJJ. I am obviously not an elite jiu-jitsu player, but it does indicate that I have learned something. Also, I am glad to be grading with three other training partners, Tim, Chris, and Tom. Chris and Tom are having their blue belts verified by Jim and Tim and I are taking our first grading.
I have trained with Tim since starting jiu-jitsu and I am glad that he and I get to test together.
Anyway...I'm now diving into my first set of Law School exams, and then after that Jim's notorious blue belt test. Should be a fun break...Gonna train my ass off. Take the Test. Compete in January.
Law school definitely eats up most of my time. Between class, studying, reading, outlining, etc. I don't have much free time.
I have, though, been keeping up on my BJJ training, and I feel that it is starting to show. I'm finally learning how to use my body to maintain position and control my opponents. The school is growing pretty well. We had maybe 20 or 25 people on the mat last night (I'm just guessing). This means that I have more diversity in my training partners....It also means I get to roll a lot more.
Tim and I entered the Bluegrass Open a few weeks ago. I feel that we both did really well. Tim and I at the BGO. I got third in my division, Tim got fourth in the open weight white belt. Adam "the Igg" and I. He beat me in the tourney and went on to get first. I went 2-1.
Jim is back from business as well. It is always good to have a black belt's perspective on your jiu-jitsu. He sees BJJ through a different set of eyes than most of the rest of us. His insight into an armbar promted one of our Brown Belts, Alex, to state that Jim reminds him that he knows nothing about jiu-jitsu...An exageration I know, but I get his point.
This update is dedicated to Ramone Kenney, Who reminded me that I have a blog...
Today begins my journey through Law School. I am studying law at NKU Chase College of Law. This may be the most difficult educational step in my academic career (or I may be overplaying it...wish me luck either way). Either way, this blog isn't dedicated to my formal education, but instead to BJJ.
Our academy is changing as well, even if only temporarily. I have recognized many positive changes in the academy. Many of my fellow students are growing and developing their jiu-jitsu and I personally feel that rolling at the academy will become very challenging in a very short period of time. Being challenged forces continual growth.
Beyond our existing members, it seems that we are growing consistently. We have had an influx of new members and there always seem to be new faces (some with plenty of BJJ experience to bring to the table).
Unfortunately for us, Jim has some out of town business to attend to, and that will leave us without our head instructor for about two months. Justin will be heading most of our classes. Luckily for the academy, Justin is an excellent instructor and will be backed by his brother (Dave, newly promoted to Purple) during Jim's absence.
The other major change will also only be temporary. Rob "The Hebrew Hammer: I don't care if someone already uses that, Rob has better Jits than him" Scharf will be leaving the academy for three months to pursue his book learnin' in France. He is at CBJJA almost every day and is one of my favorite people to train with (we constantly challenge each other and seem to stay pretty even as far as skill is concerned). He'll be back from France with some crazy moves and cool take downs and he'll beat me up even more.
...since I have had a chance to post. A lot of family issues have diverted my attention away from my regular schedule and I am now struggling to get back on track.
This weekend was filled with jiu-jitsu and similarly related activities.
Saturday I went to our open mat for rolling and some basic drills. After that Rob, Jesse, Kelly, Dave, and I Hit the Little Miami for some supplemental training on canoes.
On Sunday I went to an another open mat at Cincibjj (another club that several of our members train at.)
After this Rob, Dave, Chris, and I went up to Adrenaline fitness for some conditioning. We did about 30 min of functional strength and conditioning work followed by some traditional cardio. Not a bad way to jump back into jiu-jitsu after two weeks off.
Due to various other commitments (family, work, sleep, etc.) I have only been on the mat once since returning from Chicago and we did not get to meet up with anyone while up there (we saw Rickson in The Incredible Hulk, does that count?) I tend to be very routine oriented and the Chicago trip has thrown a wrench in my normal schedule.
Headed to Chicago for a few days with Cindy and my training partner, Rob. Spending today packing and then catching a bus tomorrow. We plan on doing some jiu-jitsu up there, hopefully with Pedro Sauer Black Belt and WEC fighter, Jeff Curran. Oh yeah....We plan on doing touristy stuff as well. I have never been to Chicago so it should be interesting.
I will be a 1-L (first year law student) starting August 11, 2008. I have been training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for just over a year, 4-5 days a week (I am currently a 3-stripe white belt). I spend most of my remaining free time with my girlfriend, Cindy.
